There are very few Sri Lankan artists whose songs can take people back to a particular time in their lives within the first few seconds.
Rookantha Goonatillake is one of them.
On 15 August, he returns to the stage at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium with “Rookantha – A Timeless Journey”, a concert built around the music he has created over several decades.
What makes the show interesting is that it goes beyond Rookantha the singer. Much of the music audiences know him for also carries his work as a composer and songwriter, making the concert a journey through his own musical catalogue rather than simply another collection of popular songs.
For many Sri Lankans, those songs are tied to school days, first loves, family journeys, heartbreaks and memories that have stayed with them for years. Younger audiences, meanwhile, continue to discover the same music in a completely different era.
That is perhaps why Rookantha’s music has lasted.
“A Timeless Journey” brings those different generations together for one evening, revisiting familiar songs while also celebrating the musician behind them.
The concert will also be streamed live through SLVLOG, giving Sri Lankan audiences overseas and those unable to attend the venue an opportunity to experience the show live.
