Sri Lanka’s 1996 World Cup heroes have come together to support children battling cancer, marking 30 years since the country’s historic cricket triumph.

To commemorate the milestone, the Sri Lanka Cricket Foundation and the Indira Cancer Trust signed a special Memorandum of Understanding this morning (17) in Maharagama.

The initiative aims to transform the legacy of the 1996 victory into a meaningful social effort, using the spirit and inspiration of cricket to uplift children suffering from cancer and other serious illnesses.

Under the programme, support will be extended through the ‘Make-A-Wish Sri Lanka’ initiative, helping fulfil the dreams of children between the ages of 3 and 17, while also improving their emotional well-being and hope during treatment.

The event was attended by Indira Cancer Trust Chairperson Dr. Lanka Jayasuriya, along with several members of the 1996 World Cup-winning team including Aravinda de Silva, Sanath Jayasuriya, Chaminda Vaas and Roshan Mahanama. (Newswire)
