Sri Lanka will provide US$1 million in humanitarian assistance to Nepal following devastating floods and landslides that have caused deaths, displacement and widespread destruction.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said President Anura Kumara Disanayaka has directed the government to make the financial contribution to support Nepal’s ongoing humanitarian and relief efforts.
President Disanayaka expressed his sorrow over the loss of lives and suffering caused by the disaster and conveyed condolences on behalf of the government and people of Sri Lanka, particularly to families who have lost loved ones.
The President also highlighted the longstanding friendship between Sri Lanka and Nepal, saying the assistance is intended to support immediate relief and humanitarian assistance for communities affected by the floods and landslides.
Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath also spoke with his Nepalese counterpart Shisir Khanal earlier on Thursday, conveying Sri Lanka’s condolences, support and solidarity with Nepal.
The Foreign Ministry said Sri Lanka would remain closely engaged with Nepal and continue exploring further ways to contribute to relief and recovery efforts. (Newswire)
