Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) in charge of Traffic Control and Road Safety, W.P.J. Senadheera, has revealed further details about the fatal accident in Akurana, confirming that investigators are examining claims of brake failure and possible driver fatigue.

The DIG said the cement-laden truck was travelling towards Kandy from Alawathugoda when the driver reportedly lost control while negotiating a left-hand bend near Kurugoda Junction on Monday (Oct. 19).

The truck initially struck a motorcycle and dragged it for approximately 160 metres before colliding with four three-wheelers and two other vehicles.

“The driver claims that the brakes failed and that he was unable to control the vehicle. We are conducting a full investigation to establish whether this was actually the cause of the accident,” DIG Senadheera said.

He confirmed that the driver had undergone an alcohol test, which returned a negative result.

“The driver was not under the influence of alcohol. However, arrangements have been made to subject him to a drug test,” he said.

The DIG said police were also investigating whether the accident could have been caused by the driver falling asleep at the wheel.

A motor vehicle examiner’s report and a Government Analyst’s report will be obtained to establish whether a mechanical defect contributed to the collision.

DIG Senadheera stressed that drivers have a legal responsibility to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before beginning a journey.

“Before taking a vehicle onto the road, the driver must check its brakes, lights and other essential components. The driver also has a legal responsibility in this regard,” he said.

He further revealed that authorities are preparing to introduce mandatory vehicle fitness certification every three months or after travelling 5,000 kilometres under proposed regulations.

The DIG said the truck driver would be produced before court under relevant criminal and motor traffic laws following the necessary investigations.

The accident claimed four lives and left several others injured. (Newswire)
