The Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre has issued an amber-level advisory for severe lightning, effective until 11 p.m. today.
The alert applies to the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces, as well as the Galle and Matara districts.
Thundershowers accompanied by severe lightning are expected in some areas, with the potential for temporary localized strong winds.
The Department of Meteorology urges the public to take necessary precautions:
- Remain indoors and avoid sheltering under trees.
- Stay clear of open areas such as paddy fields, tea plantations, and water bodies.
- Refrain from using wired telephones and connected electric appliances.
- Avoid traveling in open vehicles like bicycles, tractors, and boats.
- Watch for fallen trees and power lines.
