Eight out of 12 Sri Lankan universities have recorded a decline in their positions in the latest QS Asia University Rankings 2027, released by QS Quacquarelli Symonds.

According to the report, the University of Colombo dropped 46 places to rank 364th in Asia, while the University of Peradeniya and the University of Sri Jayewardenepura were ranked 389th and 398th, respectively.

However, two Sri Lankan universities recorded significant improvements, with the University of Moratuwa climbing 37 places to rank 517th and the University of Kelaniya advancing 44 places to secure the 687th position.

Despite its decline, the University of Colombo retained its position as Sri Lanka’s highest-ranked university in Asia for the fifth consecutive year.

It was also the only Sri Lankan university to feature among Asia’s top 200 universities in the Employer Reputation category, ranking 192nd.

QS Quacquarelli Symonds indicates that increased competition among Asian universities, including the addition of nearly 200 new institutions to this year’s rankings, contributed to the decline in the positions of several Sri Lankan universities.

A drop in the Employer Reputation indicator, which measures employers’ perceptions of university graduates, is also reported to have affected the rankings of the University of Colombo and the University of Sri Jayewardenepura.

The rankings take into account several factors, including the proportion of academic staff holding doctoral degrees, student-to-faculty ratios and employer reputation.

However, a decline in ranking does not necessarily indicate a deterioration in the quality of education, as changes in regional competition can also influence university positions, QS Quacquarelli Symonds added.
