Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi held separate telephone conversations with the foreign ministers of India and Sri Lanka to discuss regional developments following the recent military escalation involving the United States and Israel.
In the discussions with India’s Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath, Araghchi spoke about the situation after what Iran described as military aggression against the country by the United States and Israel, according to an official statement.
During the calls, Araghchi condemned the recent attacks carried out against Iran and called on governments and the United Nations to strongly condemn the actions of the United States and Israel.
He also raised concerns over the attack on the Iranian naval vessel IRIS Dena, which Iran said was targeted in international waters about 2,000 miles from its shores without prior warning.
Araghchi stated that Iran intends to pursue the matter through legal and international channels at relevant global bodies.
During the conversation with Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath, the Iranian minister also expressed appreciation for Sri Lanka’s assistance in the rescue operation for sailors from the frigate Dena.
Sri Lanka had deployed naval assets to assist the distressed vessel off its southern coast earlier this week, rescuing several sailors who were later brought ashore for treatment.
Both sides also stressed the importance of continuing diplomatic contacts and consultations between their countries. (Newswire)
