Police arrested a suspect at the Bandaranaike International Airport on December 20 for attempting to illegally bring a large consignment of cigarettes into the country.
Officers of the Police Narcotics Bureau Airport Unit carried out the arrest at the arrivals terminal following a tip-off. Police seized 42,000 cigarettes, equivalent to 210 cartons, during the operation.
The suspect is a 21-year-old resident of the Avissawella Road, Apalapitiya area.
Further investigations are being conducted by the Police Narcotics Bureau Airport Unit. Police said photographs and video footage related to the seizure have been documented. (Newswire)
