The Colombo District Court yesterday (10) delivered its verdict in the defamation case filed by former Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka against Ranjan Jayalal, who was the General Secretary of the Ceylon Electricity Workers’ Union at the time.

Ranawaka had filed the case alleging that Jayalal made a false statement defaming him during his tenure as Minister of Power and Energy.

The court ruled that the statement was entirely false and ordered Jayalal to pay one million rupees in compensation to Patali Champika Ranawaka.

Speaking to the media on Friday, Ranawaka said, “Ranjan Jayalal falsely accused me of bringing a bed worth Rs. 80,000 to the CEB circuit bungalow in Kataragama from Colombo. The court has ordered them to pay Rs. 1 million, but I do not want this money. Instead, I urge their leader, Anura Kumara Dissanayake, to return the millions they defrauded and extorted from CEB employees.” (NewsWire)
