Rain expected in some provinces today

Several spells of showers are expected in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and Uva provinces, as well as in the Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Galle, and Matara districts today, according to the Department of Meteorology. 

A few showers may occur in the North-western province, while showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in the Uva province and in the Ampara and Batticaloa districts during the afternoon or night. 

Strong winds of about 40-50 kmph can be expected at times over the Western slopes of the central hills and in the Northern, North-central and North-western provinces and the Trincomalee and Hambantota districts.

Meanwhile, the Naval and fishing communities have been requested to be vigilant of rough seas.

The Department of Meteorology says showers will occur at several places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Chilaw to Matara via Colombo and Galle. 

Winds will be Westerly to South-westerly and wind speed will be 30-40 kmph. Wind speed can increase up to 55-60 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Chilaw to Kankasanthurai via Mannar and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota. Wind speed can increase up to 45-50 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Chilaw to Matara via Colombo and Galle, and from Kankasanthurai to Trincomalee via Mullaittivu.  

The sea areas off the coast extending from Chilaw to Kankasanthurai via Mannar and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota will be very rough at times. The sea areas off the coast extending from Chilaw to Matara via Colombo and Galle and from Kankasanthurai to Trincomalee via Mullaittivu may be fairly rough at times. The wave height of about 2.0–2.5 m may increase in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota. (Newswire)
