The Attorney General today (14) instructed the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to name Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MP Namal Rajapaksa as a suspect in connection with alleged financial irregularities and money‑laundering linked to the purchase of Airbus aircraft for SriLankan Airlines.

The directive follows information uncovered during investigations into the alleged bribery surrounding the transaction.

Rajapaksa has been named a suspect under Section 3 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act No. 5 of 2006.

Namal Rajapaksa was arrested by the Bribery Commission on September 04 after recording a statement for nearly 05 hours.

He was produced before court on suspicion of accepting a USD 800,000 bribe during the controversial Airbus aircraft purchase deal and remanded until September 18. (Newswire)
