A Fundamental Rights petition has been filed in the Supreme Court, seeking to invalidate seven Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) signed between Sri Lanka and India on April 5.
The agreements were signed at the Presidential Secretariat in the presence of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The petition names Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, Cabinet members, the Attorney General, and others as respondents.
Petitioners, which include Dr. Gunadasa Amarasekara allege the MoUs violate Sri Lanka’s Constitution and international law, claiming the public has not been informed of the contents. They argue that bypassing parliamentary scrutiny undermines national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The petition seeks a Supreme Court ruling on the alleged violation of fundamental rights, an interim order to halt implementation of the MoUs, and Rs. 2 million in compensation. (Newswire)
