
A 65‑year‑old man from Battaramulla has been arrested for defrauding the public by promising jobs in Canada, police said.
The suspect, taken into custody by the Special Investigations Unit of the SLBFE, is accused of swindling over Rs. 40 million from people across several areas.
He was produced before the Kaduwela Magistrate’s Court and remanded until September 10.
Aggrieved parties told the media that the suspect had falsely claimed to have served as the Canadian Ambassador in 1988/89.
He allegedly promised to send individuals overseas within two and a half months, collecting large sums of money in the process.
Investigations by the Central Crime Investigation Bureau (CCIB) have revealed that the suspect is wanted in connection with several other financial frauds. (Newswire)
