The atmospheric disturbance that prevailed over the Bay of Bengal has developed into a low-pressure area and is currently located to the northeast of Sri Lanka, the Department of Meteorology said.
Under the influence of the system, heavy showers or thundershowers and strong wind gusts of 50-60 kmph are possible in parts of the island.
However, prevailing rainy conditions are expected to ease from today (23) as the low-pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal moves away from the island, the Department said.
Several spells of showers are forecast in the Northern, North Central and North Western provinces and in the Trincomalee District.
Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few locations in the Galle, Matara, Rathnapura and Hambantota districts after 2 p.m.
Showers or thundershowers may occur at several places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Mannar to Batticaloa via Kankasanthurai and Trincomalee. Showers are also possible at a few locations in other sea areas around the island.
Winds in the sea areas around the island will be northwesterly at 20-40 kmph.
Sea conditions are expected to be moderate. However, temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers. Sea areas may be rough at times in affected regions.
The public is advised to take adequate precautions to minimize damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers. Naval and fishing communities meanwhile have been urged to remain vigilant. (Newswire)
