The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has rejected as false a social media post claiming that the prices of milk powder, cultured milk drinks and yoghurt have been increased.
The CAA said a post designed as a “Breaking News” alert was circulating on social media claiming that the price of a kilogram of milk powder had been increased by Rs. 260, a bottle of cultured milk drink by Rs. 40 and a yoghurt by Rs. 20.
The Authority said the information regarding these purported price increases is false and urged consumers not to share such claims without verification from official or reliable sources.
“Simply labelling something as ‘Breaking News’ does not make it true,” the CAA said, warning that false or unverified information could create unnecessary concern among consumers and confusion in the market.
The public has been advised to verify reports of price changes through official announcements before sharing them on social media.
The CAA also urged consumers to report suspicious price changes or other market irregularities through its 1977 hotline during office hours. (Newswire)
