Police deny reports of special protection for MPs and Gnanasara Thera

The Sri Lanka Police have refuted a news report published in a local newspaper on July 12 claiming that special protection had been provided to 13 Members of Parliament and General Secretary of the Bodu Bala Sena, Ven. Galagodaaththe Gnanasara Thera, it was reported. 

According to state newspaper Dinamina, in an official statement signed by Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police Dinesh Karunaratne (Special Protection), the Police clarified that no such protection has been extended to the individuals named in the report.

The statement specifically listed those mentioned in the article, including government MPs Ashoka Ranwala, Sarath Kumara, Ajith Shantha Priyadarshana, Ruwan Wijewira, Tilanka U. Gamage, Sunil Biyanwala, and Dinesh Hemanta, as well as Deputy Speaker Dr. Mohamed Risvi Yali, opposition MPs Ranjith Maddumabandara and H.L. Dharmasena, and Ven. Gnanasara Thera.

The Police emphasized that the report published in the newspaper was inaccurate and reiterated that none of the listed individuals have been granted special protection. (Newswire)
