Sri Lanka has taken another step toward positioning itself as an international sports tourism destination, with the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports officially granting approval and support for a historic international rugby tour and sports festival scheduled for August.
The announcement was made at a special press briefing held at the Duncan White Auditorium in Colombo attended by Sports Minister, senior ministry officials, and representatives of the organizing committee.
The week-long sports festival, scheduled from August 22 to 28, will feature the first-ever tour to Sri Lanka by England Premiership Rugby side Northampton Saints, alongside the Asia Pacific Lions Rugby team.
Organizers said the touring squad will include several internationally renowned rugby players, while Australian rugby legend David Campese will serve as Rugby Director. Former Australian captain Will Genia is also expected to participate in the event.
As part of the programme, a T20 charity cricket match featuring international rugby stars and Sri Lankan cricket legends will be held on August 23.
The initiative will also focus on local sports development, with international training opportunities for Sri Lanka’s national rugby squad, coaching education programmes, and community outreach sessions for local coaches across the country.
The tour will conclude with a major rugby fixture at the Colombo Racecourse International Stadium on August 28.
The Ministry said the event is expected to attract international visitors and investment while promoting Sri Lanka globally as a safe and attractive destination for sports tourism. (Newswire)
