Two 15-year-old boys missing in separate drowning incidents; Australian tourist rescued

Two 15-year-old boys have been reported missing in separate drowning incidents in Weligama and Payagala, while police lifeguards rescued an Australian tourist caught in a strong current off Mirissa.

According to police, a 15-year-old boy from Denipitiya, Weligama, went missing on September 19 while fishing with two other children in a tributary of the Polwathumodara River near the Nugaduwa Bridge in Dambokka.

In a separate incident, another 15-year-old boy from Kuda Payagala was swept away while swimming in the sea with a group of friends on the evening of September 19.

Police, Navy personnel and local residents are conducting search operations for both missing boys.

Meanwhile, a 30-year-old Australian national was rescued by officers attached to the Mirissa Police Lifesaving Unit after being caught in a strong current while swimming in the sea on September 19.

Police said the tourist was brought safely ashore and provided with first aid.

The rescue was carried out by Sub-Inspector Mendis and Police Constables Mayura, Adhikari, Kumarasinghe and Hasanka. (Newswire)
