International Cricket commentator Ravi Shastri says Sri Lanka could be a major threat in the Super 8 stage if conditions favour spin, warning rivals not to underestimate the home side.
“If the pitch stops and turns, they’re going to be dangerous,” Shastri said, reflecting on Sri Lanka’s recent performance specially against Australia.
Sri Lanka produced a commanding all-round display, chasing down a 180-plus target in just 17.1 overs. Shastri described the effort as “more than outstanding.”
“To get 180-plus runs in just 17.1 overs is more than an outstanding effort. Everything came together that day. The bowling was good, the fielding was good,” he said.
He also acknowledged the experience within Sri Lanka’s support staff, including fielding coach R Sridhar and batting coach Vikram Rathour.
“When I see two coaches there from my staff — Sridhar and Vikram — it feels good. You want to encourage your guys,” he said.
Shastri further noted that the presence of experienced former internationals such as Sanath Jayasuriya and Lasith Malinga adds strength to Sri Lanka’s backroom setup.
“They’ve got a formidable support staff to back the players. Don’t discount them. They’re playing at home,” he said.
However, Shastri added that Sri Lanka would miss injured leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga, describing him as “a class spinner” whose absence could be felt in the latter stages of the tournament. (Newswire)
