Sri Lanka has reported 88,088 dengue cases so far this year, with infections surging sharply in June and July, according to official data released as of midnight on August 5.
Monthly figures show a steady rise from 7,866 cases in January to a peak of 29,975 in July, while August has already recorded 2,739 cases in its first week.
The Western Province remains the hardest hit, accounting for more than half of all cases (46,651; 52.9%). Within the province, Gampaha (18,739) and Colombo (17,490) districts top the list. Other high‑burden districts include Kandy (6,195), Matara (5,910), and Kalutara (5,753).
Nationwide, 63 dengue deaths have been reported this year, with a case fatality rate of 0.07%. Health authorities have identified 137 high‑risk MOH areas in Week 30, with an average of 2,027 new cases daily.
Officials continue to urge the public to eliminate mosquito breeding sites and seek immediate medical attention for suspected symptoms, as the active southwest monsoon is expected to worsen conditions conducive to dengue transmission. (Newswire)
