Minister of Power Kumara Jayakody says employees of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) who do not agree to the new restructuring model may opt to leave with compensation.

He made this statement during a special media briefing held yesterday (15th) at the Government Information Department, addressing the current situation surrounding the CEB.

The minister noted that several impractical demands have been presented, including compensation amounts that could lead to the closure of the CEB.

He explained that the CEB has been divided into four main entities: generation, transmission, distribution, and systems management. Despite this division, ownership remains with the government.

The minister added that employees have been informed they will be absorbed into these new entities, and those unwilling to do so will have the opportunity to resign.

Employees who voluntarily resign will be eligible to claim compensation of up to Rs. 500,000 without discrimination. He emphasized that if the CEB had continued in its previous form, a decision had been made to send home 12,000 employees after August 27.

The Minister further stated that although all trade unions were summoned on the 2nd of this month and responses were provided to their concerns, new demands were submitted on the 3rd.

Minister of Power Kumara Jayakody said it is suspected that these impractical demands are intended to disrupt the restructuring process of the CEB. (Newswire)
