Sri Lanka’s law enforcement authorities have uncovered major developments linked to the narcotics haul seized by the Navy in the southern seas, with a local government candidate among those arrested.
Police Narcotics Bureau officials confirmed that a Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) local government candidate from Pannala was taken into custody in connection with the drug operation. Investigations are underway to determine his role and possible wider links.
According to the Deputy Minister of Defence, officers recovered 200 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine (ICE) and 100 kilograms of heroin from the intercepted drug-carrying vessel. The stock is valued at an estimated Rs. 4 billion.
Further inspections of the vessel revealed 18 packages containing heroin and ICE, along with two firearms, a reporter from Hiru News said. The Navy detained the boat during a maritime patrol in the southern seas before handing it over to the relevant authorities for further investigation.
Police and defence officials said the operation remains active, with additional arrests not ruled out. (Newswire)
