Metro Bus is set to deploy 104 newly introduced buses on seven routes in the Western Province from September 29, as part of an effort to provide a more comfortable and secure public transport service while reducing traffic congestion in Colombo.
Metro Bus Chairman S.M.U.P. Thilakaratne said all arrangements had been completed to commence operations with the new fleet on September 29, with the launch scheduled to be held under the patronage of the President.
The new buses will operate on seven routes centred around Colombo, with services aimed at ensuring passengers reach their destinations according to scheduled routes and times.
“We are introducing this bus service to help the public reach their destinations in comfort and safety,” Thilakaratne said.
He said a key objective of introducing the new buses was to reduce the number of private vehicles entering Colombo, particularly those carrying only a single passenger.
“One of our main expectations is to reduce the traffic coming into Colombo,” he said.
Thilakaratne noted that many people currently travel to and from offices in private vehicles, often with only one person in each vehicle, resulting in a large number of vehicles being used for daily commuting.
“Our hope is to reduce the number of vehicles being used by introducing these buses,” he said.
He added that encouraging members of the public to use public transport for their daily commute could help address traffic congestion in Colombo. (Newswire)
