The South-West monsoon has established over Sri Lanka, due to which showers are expected in some provinces today, according to the Department of Meteorology.
As such, showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, North-western and Central provinces and the Galle and Matara districts, while a few showers may occur in the North-central province.
Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in the Uva province and the Ampara district in the evening or night.
Fairly strong winds of about 30-40 kmph can be expected at times over the Western slopes of the central hills, the Northern, North-central, North-western and Southern provinces and the Trincomalee district.
Meanwhile, the Naval and fishing communities have been warned to remain vigilant of strong winds and rough seas today, with temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas expected during thundershowers.
According to the Met Department, showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle.
Winds will be westerly to south-westerly, and wind speed will be 30-40 kmph. Wind speed can increase up to 55-60 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Chilaw to Kankesanthurai via Puttalam and Mannar, and from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota.
Wind speed can increase up to 50 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Chilaw to Galle via Colombo and from Kankesanthurai to Trincomalee via Mullaittivu.
The sea areas off the coast extending from Chilaw to Kankesanthurai via Puttalam and Mannar, and from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota, will be rough at times.
