Six suspects have been arrested in connection with the assault on a bus driver and conductor after a group of individuals travelling on two motorcycles intercepted their bus in Kalutara, police said.
The incident, which was captured on video and widely circulated on social media, reportedly occurred at around 9.00 p.m. on October 26 in the Nagas Junction area within the Kalutara North Police Division.
Kalutara North Police arrested all six suspects along with the two motorcycles allegedly used in the attack.
The suspects were produced before the Kalutara Magistrate’s Court on October 29, where they submitted sworn affidavits admitting responsibility for the offence.
The court sternly warned the suspects and ordered their release on personal bail of Rs. 500,000 each. The next date for the case was also announced.
Preliminary investigations have revealed that the assault stemmed from an earlier incident in Moratuwa, where the bus had stopped at a traffic signal and a person attempting to board was asked to get off by the conductor.
The six suspects are residents of Wadduwa, Waskaduwa and Moronthuduwa.
Kalutara North Police are conducting further investigations into the incident.
