Sri Lanka’s Department of Meteorology has issued an Amber advisory for high waves in sea areas extending from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Galle, Matara and Hambantota.

The advisory, issued by the Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre at 5.30 p.m. on August 19, will remain valid until 5.30 p.m. on August 20.

According to the department, swell waves of around 2.5 to 3 metres may increase in sea areas off the coast from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Galle, Matara and Hambantota. The wave heights specified in the advisory apply to sea areas and not land areas.

The department also warned that near-shore sea areas from Beruwala to Matara via Galle could experience surges due to swell waves.

Naval and fishing communities operating in the affected sea areas have been urged to remain vigilant. (Newswire)
