A newly constructed, fully‑fledged Mullaitivu Post Office was vested in the public this morning under the patronage of Health and Media Minister Nalinda Jayatissa.
Built at a cost of Rs. 28 million, the modern facility is designed to deliver more efficient postal services to 12,231 families and a wide range of state and private institutions in the district.
The Grade I post office will directly serve 5,830 families, while six sub‑post offices under its administration will cater to another 4,883 families. In addition, 68 state institutions, nine hotels, and four factories will benefit from its services. Construction began last October and was carried out by the Department of Buildings.
This marks the 12th new post office opened under allocations made in the 2025 Budget, which earmarked Rs. 600 million for new buildings, the first such funding in a decade.
Speaking at the event, Minister Jayatissa noted that this was his first visit to Mullaitivu after assuming office, and emphasized the government’s commitment to strengthening the state economy, increasing efficiency, and reinvesting public revenue to uplift living standards. He highlighted that development projects worth more than Rs. 2,500 million have recently been launched in Mullaitivu and surrounding districts.
The Minister also pointed to systemic inefficiencies and corruption in the past that contributed to the country’s economic crisis, stressing that the government is now focused on delivering development outcomes that directly benefit people. He added that ministries covering health, education, highways, and housing are working in coordination to advance district‑level projects, while warning that attempts to spread nationalism or extremism will be met with enforcement of the law.
Further investments in postal modernization include Rs. 400 million for new buildings and Rs. 600 million for renovations in 2026, alongside allocations for transport vehicles, CCTV systems, desktop computers, and tablet devices. (Newswire)
