Civil Activist Piyath Nikeshala, who was remanded after being arrested by the Police Computer Crimes Division over a social media post, has been granted bail.

Nikeshala, a key activist during the ‘Aragalaya’, was granted bail after being produced before the court today (Jan 31).

He was arrested after reporting to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to record a statement on Monday (Jan 29).

The lawyer representing Nikeshala told the media that his client had been summoned before the CID to record a statement over sharing a telephone conversation involving Minister of Public Security Tiran Alles.

The lawyer said that an individual had shared on his personal TikTok account a telephone conversation with Minister Alles, which had been downloaded and shared by Nikeshala on his ‘YouTube’ channel.

Revealing that when inquired by the Judge on the chief complainant, the Police were unable to name a person, he further said that it had been found that information on Nikeshala’s activity had come from the State Intelligence Service.

Piyath Nikeshala was previously arrested by the CID in June last year on charges of having live-streamed the incident of protesters setting fire to President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s Colombo residence during the anti-government protests in July 2022. However, he was later granted bail by the Fort Magistrate’s Court. (NewsWire)
