The planned trade union action by the Locomotive Operating Engineers’ Union, which was scheduled to begin at midnight today, has been called off after the Ministry of Transport agreed to temporarily suspend locomotive driver training being conducted for 20 army personnel.

The union had threatened to halt services in protest against the government’s decision to train army members as locomotive drivers, but reached an understanding with officials following the Ministry’s announcement on the postponement.

In a statement, the union said the decision to suspend the training “addresses our immediate concerns,” leading them to withdraw the industrial action.

Transport Ministry representatives confirmed that further discussions will take place with the union on the matter. (Newswire)
