A former member of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), who was deported from India after serving a 10-year prison sentence, has been arrested at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA), police said.

According to the Police Counter-Terrorism and Investigation Division (CTID), the 50-year-old suspect was taken into custody on the night of October 26, 2026, shortly after arriving in Sri Lanka.

The suspect, a resident of Masiyapitti in the Sandilipay area, was arrested by Indian security forces in 2015 on suspicion of involvement in attempts to reorganise the LTTE.

He was subsequently convicted by an Indian court and sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Following the completion of his sentence, Indian authorities deported him to Sri Lanka, where he was arrested upon arrival.

Police said a 72-hour detention order has been obtained based on intelligence information to facilitate further questioning.

The Police Counter-Terrorism and Investigation Division is conducting further investigations. (Newswire)
