
President’s Counsel Daya Pelpola, a distinguished lawyer, politician and diplomat, has passed away at the age of 85.
Pelpola served as Legal Secretary of the United National Party for over 15 years and also held the position of Acting General Secretary, playing a key role in strengthening the party.
During the ‘Yahapalana’ period, he was appointed Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to Italy from 2015 to 2019, where he implemented programs to enhance political, economic, cultural and educational ties between the two countries.
He also held prominent positions in the public sector, including Chairman of SriLankan Airlines, the National Lotteries Board and the Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation.
His body has been placed at No. 78, Liyanage Mawatha, Pelawatta, Battaramulla. Preliminary rites will be held today (16 Dec), at 3:00 pm at Pelawatta Lyon Baston Roman Catholic Church, followed by burial at Borella Kanatte at 4:30 pm. (Newswire)
