The Government says the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) will take responsibility for up to Rs. 600,000 deposited in financial institutions supervised by the bank.

Co- Cabinet Spokesman Minister Bandula Gunawardena said deposits beyond Rs. 600 000 will be difficult to be repaid by the CBSL.

He further requested the general public to rethink prior to depositing more than Rs. 600,000 in CBSL supervised financial institutions.

“Financial institutions supervised by the CBSL highlighted in this particular occasion do not include State Banks.” Minister Gunawardena clarified.

The Minister mentioned this during the weekly Cabinet media briefing held this morning, when commenting on the crisis faced by depositors of The Finance Company PLC.
