FR petition filed seeking repatriation of Sri Lankans stranded overseas

A Fundamental Rights (FR) Petition was filed at the Supreme Court today seeking an order to be issued on the Government to repatriate Sri Lankans stranded overseas due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The petition was filed by Attorney-at-Law and public interest litigation activist Nagananda Kodithuwakku today.

The Attorney- General, Minister of Health, and the Director of the Department of Immigration and Emigration have been named as respondents.

In his petition, Kodithuwakku points out that a large group of Sri Lankans who are stranded in the Middle East due to the COVID-19 pandemic is facing severe inconvenience and hardships.

He further said that nearly 40 stranded Sri Lankans have died to date, and pointed out that the Government is vested with powers under the Constitution to repatriate the stranded Sri Lankans. (Newswire)
