Six judges of the Court of Appeal have been elevated for vacancies at the Supreme Court.

The Parliamentary Council approved the names of the six judges during its meeting held on Tuesday (06).

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa is vested with powers under the 20th Amendment to the Constitution to make appointments to the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal.

The President is reported to have forwarded the names of six Appeal Court judges to be elevated to represent the Supreme Court.

President Rajapaksa’s nominees are Court of Appeal President Justice A.M.D. Nawaz and Justices Kumudini Wickremesinghe, Shiran Gunaratne, Achala Wengappuli, Mahinda Samayawardana and Janak de Silva.

The approval comes after Attorney General Dappula de Livera had raised concerns over senior members from his Department being overlooked for vacancies at the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal.

The two courts will be expanded under the recently passed 20th Amendment to the Constitution, with the Supreme Court bench being expanded from 11-17. (NewsWire)
