The new Covid variant reported in the United Kingdom (UK) has been detected in Sri Lanka.

Chief Epidemiologist of the Health Ministry Dr. Sudath Samaraweera said the new variant was detected on a person who had arrived from the UK recently and in quarantine.

The new variant has been confirmed by Professor Neelika Malavige from the Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Medical Sciences at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura and the University’s research team on COVID-19.

Dr. Sudath Samaraweera said the new variant is highly transmissible and behaves differently to that of the existing strain in the country.
