Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education Harini Amarasuriya has emphasized the need to add a new dimension to Sri Lanka’s medical education to produce doctors with compassion.
She made the remarks at the inaugural meeting of the expert committee appointed to draft a National Policy on Medical Education, held at the Ministry of Education recently (26).
The committee is tasked with preparing a comprehensive policy to strengthen medical education in line with national health needs.
Initial discussions focused on identifying areas for development, proposing short‑term and sustainable solutions to current challenges, and ensuring reforms that directly impact the country’s future and public well‑being.
PM Amarasuriya stressed that policy attention must be directed towards curriculum reforms, evaluation processes, clinical training, medical research, faculty staffing, and infrastructure.
She also highlighted the importance of introducing awareness mechanisms for students selecting medical courses, as well as reforms in general and higher education to produce disciplined doctors suited to modern demands. (Newswire)
