Weather alert : Three updates for Friday

  • Weather forecast for Friday;

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North-western provinces and in Galle and Matara districts today. Fairly heavy falls above 50 mm are likely at some places in these areas.

Several spells of showers will occur in the Northern and North Central provinces. Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the Uva province and Batticaloa and Ampara districts after 1.00 pm.

Strong winds of about 40-50 kmph can be expected at times over the Western slopes of the central hills and in the Western, Northern, North-central, North-western, and Southern provinces and in the Trincomalee district.

  • Weather forecast for sea areas;

A low-pressure area is likely to develop over the deep-sea areas in the Bay of Bengal to the northeast of the island from today onwards. Multi-day fishing vessels and the naval community in the above sea area are requested to be attentive to future forecasts issued by the Department of Meteorology in this regard.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Mullaitivu to Hambanthota via Kankasanthurai, Mannar, Colombo and Galle. Showers or thundershowers will occur at a few places in other sea areas around the island during the afternoon or night.

Winds will be south-westerly and speed will be 30-40 kmph. Wind speed can increase up to 50-60 kmph at times in the sea areas around the island.

The sea areas around the island will be fairly rough and rough at times. Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers.
