The Attorney General (AG) today filed indictments against 3 persons, including former Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka and former Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of the Welikada Police Station ASP Sudath Asmadala.

The indictments were filed on causing grievous injury to a person by rash and negligent acts, and other charges over an accident reported in Rajagiriya in 2016.

On 03 June, former OIC of the Welikada Police Station ASP Sudath Asmadala was granted bail over the accident after surrendering to the Colombo Additional Magistrate.

The Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) was earlier instructed by the Attorney General (AG) to obtain a warrant and arrest ASP Asmadala.

ASP Asmadala was to be arrested on charges of fabricating false evidence in the case over the accident involving former Parliamentarian Patali Champika Ranawaka.

Former MP Ranawaka’s Jeep was involved in an accident in Rajagiriya in 2016, critically injuring a motorcyclist.

The former Parliamentarian, who had reportedly fled the scene, had later produced his driver in court as the one who had been driving the vehicle at the time of the accident.

Patali Champika Ranawaka was later arrested and remanded in December 2019 over the accident on the instructions of the Attorney General. (Newswire)
