A dispute has arisen over the settlement of the damages caused to the luxury car showroom in Colombo 07 after a SUV crashed into it on November 15.

The 19-year-old daughter of the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) in charge of the Nugegoda Division had driven the SUV without a valid licence, crashing it into the showroom damaging a luxury car that was on display for sale.

According to the Sunday Times, the owners of the luxury car showroom said despite the total damage caused to the showroom and the luxury car on display being estimated at Rs. 60 million, a claim has been made only for Rs. 20 million.

The showroom owners have claimed that the parties involved in the accident have refused to settle the payment for damages.

The SSP’s daughter was arrested following the accident and released on a Police bail of Rs. 10,000 a few hours later. She was later produced before the Colombo Magistrate’s Court and was released on a surety worth Rs. 200,000.

The SUV that crashed into the luxury car showroom reportedly belongs to a rent- a-car company and is said to have suffered damages costing Rs. 15 million.

The Lawyer representing the company has claimed the company will not be able to pay the settlement to the damaged car showroom as its vehicle was not driven by the owner and was driven by a person without a valid licence.

The Police is set to file charges against the son of the rent-a-car company who had permitted the SSP’s daughter to drive the SUV without a valid licence.

The case filed on the accident will be taken up for hearing on 22 January, 2021. (NewsWire)
