Health officials warn of rise in dengue

The National Dengue Control Unit has warned of a significant rise in the dengue disease in Sri Lanka this year.

Director Dr. Aruna Jayasekara said there could be a further rise in the cases in the coming months due to the prevalent rainy season.

He said dengue is on the rise, and the cases reported thus far this year are higher in comparison to the same period last year.

According to the Epidemiology Unit, 6,389 cases have been reported so far since January this year, while 1,320 case were reported in the month of April alone.

The highest number of cases of 2,686 were reported from the Batticaloa District, and the second highest of 939 cases have been reported from the Colombo District, while the lowest number of cases of three was reported from the Mullaitivu District.

The Western Province recorded the highest number of cases among the provinces, which was 1,743 dengue cases.

The highest incident of dengue cases of 1,794, has been reported in the month of February.

The National Dengue Control Unit Director Dr. Aruna Jayasekara urged the public to remain vigilant and to clean dengue breeding grounds on a regular basis. (NewsWire)
