Colombo Port City Commission bill passed in Parliament

The Colombo Port City Economic Commission Bill has been passed with a majority in Parliament today.

The debate on the bill commenced yesterday and was continued for the second consecutive day today, after which a vote was held at the end of the debate.

During the vote, 149 MPs voted in favour, while 58 Parliamentarians voted against.

The debate on the Colombo Port City Economic Commission Bill commenced after the Supreme Court issued a verdict, stating that some clauses are inconsistent with the Consitution.

The court further advised that the bill can be made valid if amended or passed through a referndum and a special majority or referendum will be required to pass it.

The Government had therafter acknowledged the Supreme Court’s determination and had stated that the amendments will be included to the draft bill.

The Supreme Court issued its determination after petitions were filed against the Colombo Port City Economic Commission Bill by several parties, including the Samagi Jana Balawegaya. (NewsWire)
