The Finance Ministry has granted approval for the sale of liquor through online delivery services of supermarkets, the Excise Department said today.

Excise Commissioner General M. J. Gunasiri said the approval has been granted under several conditions.

As per the conditions, the advertising of alcohol sale has been prohibited, while a system must be implemented to ensure that liquor is sold to customers above the age of 21.

The Excise Commissioner General further said the guidelines on the system under which the alcohol is to be delivered will be announced soon.

He added that permission has not been granted by the National Operations Centre for the Prevention of COVID-19 (NOCPC) in this regard as yet.

M. J. Gunasiri said approval will have to be obtained from the NOCPC to sell alcohol through online delivery services during the islandwide travel restriction that has been enforced in the country.

The sale of alcohol was banned in line with the islandwide travel restriction that was imposed in the country on 21st May due to the coronavirus pandemic. (NewsWire)
