The Sri Lanka Medical Association (SLMA) has objected to the approval of a proposal to enable the sale of alcohol through delivery services of supermarkets.

In a letter addressed to Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, the Association has highlighted the risks of permitting the online sale of alcohol, such as health and economic consequences.

Earlier today, the Excise Department announced that the Finance Ministry has granted approval for the sale of liquor through online delivery services of supermarkets.

Conditional approval given for online sale of alcohol

Excise Commissioner General M. J. Gunasiri said the approval has been granted under several conditions, such as the prohibition of advertising the sale of alcohol, and the requirement to implement a system to ensure that alcohol is sold to customers above the age of 21. (NewsWire)
