Delta variant suspected in Madiwela- health officials

The Indian / Delta variant of the coronavirus is suspected to have been detected in the Pragathipura area in Madiwela.

The Deputy Director-General of Health Services Dr. Hemantha Herath told NewsWire control activities have begun as initial indications of the presence of the variant have been detected in the area.

He said no official confirmation has been received as yet, but health officials are implementing precautionary measures in this regard. 

Earlier, the Delta variant, which is a more highly transmissible variant of the coronavirus, was detected from the Dematagoda area in Colombo, making it the first detection from within the community.

Health officials said five people were found to have been infected with the variant in Dematagoda after conducting random Covid community testing. (NewsWire)
