Special trial-at-bar appointed to try Hemasiri Fernando and Pujith Jayasundara for Easter attacks

A special trial-at-bar has been appointed to try the cases filed against former Defence Secretary Hemasiri Fernando and former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Pujith Jayasundera over the Easter Sunday attacks.

The Chief Justice has appointed the special trial-at-bar to hear the cases filed against the former Government officials in connection to the attacks that took place on 21st April 2019. 

As per the report by the Presidential Commission of Inquiry appointed to probe the attacks, both Fernando and Jayasundara have been accused of neglecting their duties and failing to prevent the attacks. 

Hemasiri Fernando served as the Defence Secretary and Pujith Jayasundara served as the IGP at the time of the Easter Sunday attacks.

They were both arrested in September 2019 in connection to investigations into the attacks. (NewsWire)
