Air Force Sergeant among four arrested for stealing explosive substance

Four suspects, including a Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) Seargeant and a Junior Navy officer, have been arrested over the robbery of a stock of the explosive substance Ammonium nitrate from the armoury of the SLAF in Welisara. 

Police spokesman, Senior DIG Ajith Rohana said a complaint had been filed with the Kelaniya Police by the Director Discipline of the Sri Lanka Air Force on the robbery.

Investigations have revealed that the explosive substance is commonly used at metal quarries.

Further investigations had led to the arrest of the four suspects, including the Sri Lanka Air Force Seargeant and a Junior Navy officer.

The Police had also recovered 70.5 kg of the stolen explosive substance from the suspects’ possession, while a three-wheeler had also been seized. 

Investigations have revealed that the suspects had distributed the stolen explosive substance to metal quarries. 

The suspects will be produced in the court today, while the Kelaniya Police is conducting further investigations into the theft. (NewsWire)
