10th MP tests positive for Covid in August

Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Kurunegala District MP Asanka Nawarathna has tested positive for Covid-19.

He is the 10th Parliamentarian to contract the virus within the month of August.

Minister Bandula Gunawardena tested positive last week (28), becoming the 9th MP to contract the virus this month.  

Agriculture Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage and Hambantota District Samagi Jana Balawegaya MP Dilip Wedarachchi were the first two MPs to initially contract the virus in August.

Thereafter, Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna’s Matale District MP Rohana Dissanayake and Badulla District MP Janaka ThissaKutti Aracchi had tested positive.

It was later reported that State Minister Prasanna Ranaweera,  Parliamentarian Dr. Thilak Rajapaksa, and Jaffna District Parliamentarian Gajen Ponnambalam had also tested positive for COVID-19.

State Minister Janaka Wakkumbura thereafter tested positive for Covid-19 last week (24).

A total of ten members of Parliament have so far contracted the coronavirus in Sri Lanka within the same month.

Several other high-ranking officials, including former Police Spokesperson SDIG Ajith Rohana, Commander of the Air Force Air Marshal Sudarshana Pathirana, and Commissioner-General of the National Election Commission Saman Sri Rathnayake had also contracted the virus during this period. (NewsWire)
