A Gazette notification has been issued amending the regulations pertaining to the modification of three-wheelers in Sri Lanka.

State Minister of Transportation Dilum Amunugama said as per the Gazette, certain regulations have been amended granting permission to modify three-wheelers in a manner that doesn’t cause inconvenience to the public.

The decision to amend certain regulations was taken following a request made from Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa by three-wheeler unions.

State Minister Amunugama said a committee comprising of representatives from the Department of Motor Traffic and Police Motor Traffic Department was appointed to hold discussions with the three-wheeler unions to study their proposals and amend the necessary legal provisions.

The Gazette has specified the modifications permitted for three-wheelers, while it also has prohibited any modifications that could result in road accidents.

State Minister Dilum Amunugama said the Gazette has been issued as guidelines for both private owners of three-wheelers and those who have rented the vehicle.

He added that a Gazette on the modification of other vehicles will also be issued in the near future after necessary discussions.
