The Government has decided to remove the control price imposed on Sugar, State Minister of Co-operative Services, Marketing Development, and Consumer Protection Lasantha Alagiyawanna said today.

He said the decision was taken during discussions with the Finance Minister after a shortage of Sugar and cement was reported from across the country yesterday (02).

The Finance Minister during discussions with importers had agreed to lift the Control Price imposed on Sugar in the country.

A shortage of Sugar has been reported in Sri Lanka due to traders selling sugar at high prices and an increase in freight costs, the State Minister explained.

Lasantha Alagiyawanna further revealed that importers have agreed to sell 1kg of Sugar for Rs. 150/- and to reduce prices when global market prices drop. (NewsWire)
