Legal action is to be initiated against the first Sri Lankan found to be infected with the Omicron variant of COVID-19.

The Public Health Inspectors Union (PHIU) said legal action will be taken against the woman and her husband soon after they complete their quarantine period, for violating the Quarantine Law.

A 25-year-old Sri Lankan woman who had returned from Nigeria on November 23, tested positive for the COVID-19 Omicron variant and was placed under quarantine at her residence in Marawila.

President of the PHIU Upul Rohana said following a visit by investigating PHI officers, it was found that the woman had moved houses and was not at the address registered with the Epidemiology Unit upon detection.

The family members of both houses have already been directed to quarantine and none of them have been vaccinated against COVID 19, while investigations are currently underway to trace other close contacts, he said.

Upul Rohana further said six associates of the infected woman have been referred for PCR tests.

Investigations are also underway regarding those who have been associated with and exposed to these individuals.

It has also been found that the infected woman and her husband have not been vaccinated, while six of their relatives were also found to be unvaccinated, he revealed. (NewsWire)
